“Remove the kinks from your mind, not your hair.” ~Marcus Garvey

This blog is inspired by every girl, teen or woman who has decided to rock their natural hair. For too long we have hidden our beautiful curls. I (Deidra) personally had to learn to love my natural hair.

It was a mysterious and exciting journey transitioning from relaxed hair to my natural curls. I had not idea what my hair would look like. I had to re-learn how to comb, care for and love my hair. If I were to be completely honest, some days I would cry when getting ready as I battled to get my hair to “look good.”

EMBRACE IT

Today I embrace my hair fully. It is 14 inches long and you probably won’t ever get to see it’s length. But it is healthier than ever before and despite popular belief, it is very easy to get my hair ready for the day. I know many like me have struggled the same, evident from posts like those below I pulled from Facebook.

“It was relaxed before it could get ‘out of hand’.”

“The way struggled to accept myself through out that time was so hard.”

“It took me a long while to learn to love my natural hair.”

“I probably cried before stepping out the house.”

“Growing up I never really got the chance to fall in love with my natural hair. It was never good enough.”

I am excited to see our children growing up in day where natural hair is flaunted instead of hidden. One person said “Going natural was the best decision I ever made,” and I must agree that it’s right up there with some of my best decisions. It just brings with it some level of confidence and a whole lot of self love. Plus, it is oh so nice to not have to worry about rainy days ruining my hair. Can I get an amen?

NATURAL BEAUTY

We are all naturally beautiful. So women, let’s be proud of our unique differences and celebrate each other’s successes. As we celebrate all women today (Happy International Women’s Day!), I leave you with the words of the man who sang it best, Mr. Tarrus Riley. Sing with me ladies!

“The way she move to her own beat
She has the qualities of a queen
SHE’S A QUEEN
Ooo-ooo, what a NATURAL BEAUTY
No need no make-up to be a cutie
She’s a queen, she’s a queen
And when they ask what a good woman’s made of
SHE’S NOT AFRAID AND ASHAMED OF WHO SHE IS
She’s royal, yeah
So royal”
