Happy Garifuna Settlement Day!
We can’t celebrate like we normally would but today we remember our Garifuna Culture and the day the Garinagu people first came to Belize.
Dangriga is the place to be during this time of year. However, with the quarantine rules, we had to improvise. We could not be there but we enjoyed watching our Brand Rep, Trevan Castillo, make Hudut while rocking our Hudut Tee. If you head to our Instagram you’ll get to enjoy this video too.
We are so grateful for the many cultures represented within our Brand Reps family. These amazing people add so much to our brand. As much as we love celebrating the 19th and eating Hudut, we could never showcase Trevan’s culture the way he does.
Hudut Day
I (Deidra) learned to make Hudut earlier this year when a friend brought me some freshly caught snapper. I woke up early this morning to make some for my family.
Hudut is a very tasty, traditional Garifuna dish. It is made of fried fish, coconut milk, spices, habanero and served with mashed ripe and green plantains. It is so rich and probably one of the best things you will ever taste. Belizeans, no matter the culture, always enjoy Hudut, especially on Garifuna Settlement Day.
