If you are not familiar with the Belizean culture, we refer to January as “Maaga Season”. This is because it is the month following the big Christmas expenses. Many Belizeans go all out to celebrate Christmas. We’ll buy presents, cook famous Belizean meals, and some will even give their homes a fresh dose of paint. Maaga is Creole for skinny. In this instance, it is used to describe a time where you have less, or in other words: you’re broke.
